You can distinguish where in the video a theme is supposed to appear by the location of ragged edges on its icon. Studio 12 includes ten Montages, each with an Opening theme for the start of your project, an Ending theme for the close, and Segue themes to use as transitions between major sections of your movies. Briefly, Montage themes are a mixture of titles and multiclip, multilayer, PiP effects that you selectively add to your projects.
Improving Studio's artistic effects was a main focus of the new release, with Montage-based themes the most significant internally developed new feature. Image stabilization results were about the same. Unfortunately, Studio's Lighting filter, which has a slider for backlight correction, proved just so-so, and PowerDirector outperformed Studio at correcting backlit test clips. With AVCHD clips, previewing the timeline took from 27 to 31 percent of the CPU cycles, as reported by Windows Task Manager-about 1 percent less than PowerDirector required. To test Studio's timeline responsiveness with common high-definition formats, I added two clips to the timeline-the first on the main track as a full-screen video, and the second as a quarter-screen picture-in-picture (PiP) above the main track. The system certainly qualifies as more powerful than the average consumer desktop, but it's not out of reach for those in the AVCHD and HDTV set, and it proved much more responsive than the HP xw4100 Workstation, with its 3.2-GHz Pentium 4 processor, that I've used in the past.

I tested the software on a dual-processor, quad-core, 2.83-GHz Hewlett-Packard xw6600 Workstation with 3GB of RAM and running Windows XP. Alternatively, if you have a dual-monitor display, you can run the program on one monitor and configure the other for full-screen preview.

One way is to preview using a DV camcorder connected to your PC via FireWire, which enables full-screen display on a television or other NTSC device attached to the camcorder.
The program's timeline editing features, though easy enough to use, haven't been updated, either, so they lack advanced features like the Multi-Trim tool of PowerDirector and Ulead VideoStudio 11 Plus, which makes quick work of carving out the desired scenes from a long capture file.Īnd as before, the in-program preview screen is the smallest in the category. This means that Studio offers the basics but lacks niceties like batch capture and high-speed DV tape scan, both available with PowerDirector. And though Studio offers several outstanding special-effects packages, several other editors, including CyberLink PowerDirector 7 Ultra, offer a more powerful feature set across the board.ĭV, HDV, and AVCHD capture remain unchanged from the previous version. But this is the only product in its class that has just two video tracks, which many users will find limiting.

Couple that with bold new special-effects themes, the cool third-party functionality this edition introduces, and lots of little enhancements, and you get an upgrade that committed Studio users will love.
With its uncomplicated interface, and following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate version 12 ($129.99 direct) still beats the other video editors when it comes to ease of use.
